Your kindness ensures older women facing homelessness can find a fresh start

Homelessness can happen to people of all ages. At 65 years old, Janice* never expected to find herself needing to move back in with her elderly parents after a lifetime of independent living.

Janice had been living in a private rental for decades. Working hard to support herself and enjoy the precious things in life like spending time with beloved friends and family.

She loved her workplace of fifteen years as a cleaner until a change in management led to challenging work conditions. From this, Janice began struggling with mental health challenges and work insecurity, which ultimately led her to quit.

Being careful with her finances, Janice had saved enough to keep her private rental, even affording a rent increase. But when her lease wasn’t renewed, Janice lost her home of eight years, forcing her to move back in with her elderly parents.

“Without mum and dad to turn to I wouldn’t have known what to do. I couldn’t bring myself to ask my mates if I could sleep on their floor."

Feeling a burden to her family and friends, Janice felt distressed and overwhelmed, not knowing who to turn to for help.

At Hutt St Centre, Janice connected with a case manager from the Aged City Living team, Nicole to support her on her journey to homefulness.

Nicole helped Janice connect with My Aged Care, giving her access to helpful information and services. Nicole also arranged much-needed dental work for Janice, restoring her confidence and smile.

With Nicole’s support, Janice found a secure, one-bedroom unit that was the perfect fit for her.

“Now that I have my own place I’m not stressing anymore – I’m a lot happier! It’s the simple things like putting up my own pictures on the walls, and inviting friends and family over."

“It’s amazing seeing so much kindness from people who donate to Hutt St Centre. Thank you."

Stories like Janice’s are only possible thanks to your support. Thank you for ensuring older adults like Janice can seek help to find a safe and secure home.

PLEASE DONATE

We were recently touched by a beautiful act of kindness from Brenda, a caring member of our community. With a lifelong love for knitting and crocheting, Brenda found solace in creating beanies, which also helped soothe her arthritic hands. Moved by her daughter's commitment to our cause, Brenda generously donated over fifty of her cosy, hand-knit beanies to provide comfort...
