Skills for a healthier life – thanks to you

Many people who walk through the doors at Hutt St Centre are looking for a nutritious breakfast or hot lunch to help them get through the day. This service is vital, but it’s also important to empower people with the skills and confidence to prepare their own healthy and delicious meals in the future.

A Nutrition class participant tips grated vegetables into a frying pan. Thanks to your support, Hutt St Centre now hosts free Nutrition and Cooking Classes, encouraging people at risk of or experiencing homelessness to identify nutritious food options and prepare simple but satisfying meals on a budget.

“Sometimes I’d go three or four days without eating,” says Glenn*, one participant who enjoyed learning how to make nutritious meals for himself.

“The last time I ate fruit was probably four or five years ago so this is something very different for me.”

Nutritionist Amanda shows participants how to prepare a range of wholesome meals, from vegetable fritters and spaghetti Bolognese to homemade custard with fruit compote. Each participant also receives their own take-home cooking kit including a new frying pan and saucepans.

“Product labels and pricing can be really tricky to decipher and I love empowering people to help make more informed choices when they’re shopping,” says Amanda.

“Healthy food doesn’t have to take a lot of time or cost a lot of money to make.”

Opportunities to learn new skills and rebuild confidence are a vital part of helping people change their circumstances for good. And programs like this are made possible thanks to generous friends like you – thank you.
