Your Kindness Brought Toby in From the Cold

You might remember Toby* from our recent Winter Appeal. His story of sleeping rough during a brutal Adelaide winter reinforced just how much your kindness means to people facing their darkest times.

Toby shared: “You can’t sleep in freezing conditions – it’s impossible. I remember wandering around in the middle of winter, trying to find somewhere out of the rain and wind. I just couldn’t go on.”

After years of struggling with shame about his homelessness and mental health challenges, Toby made the choice to ask for help at Hutt St Centre.

“Hutt St helped me get treatment for my mental health and found me accommodation. When I had no food and couldn’t support myself, they came through. I’d never had that kind of help before.”

Now Toby has been living independently and working as a chef for more than a year. Soon he hopes to find a private rental where he can foster pets to help other people facing homelessness while they get back on their feet.

Toby has a special message for the people who helped him find his way in from the cold:

“To the people who give to Hutt St Centre, I just want to say I owe you my life. I don’t think words will ever be enough. Whatever you give, that support does make a difference.”

Your generous support helps people like Toby find the fresh start they deserve.
