Hutt St Centre

Thank you for being there in Mark’s time of need

When people like Mark* find themselves sleeping on the streets, it’s often because they can see no other choice.

Thankfully your kindness means a warm welcome and the chance for a fresh start here at Hutt St Centre.

Mark’s story began with a successful career in the Army, but after his discharge he found it difficult to adjust back to civilian life. He tried a few new careers, from bus driver to a kayaking instructor. But he fell on hard times once the work dried up.

Mark was staying with a mate and, without a steady source of income, he soon wore out his welcome. Without telling anyone, he began sleeping rough on the streets of Adelaide. He didn’t know which way to turn – until he found Hutt St Centre. Mark says:

“When you’re homeless, you feel invisible. But when I walked into Hutt St, right away someone sat by me and asked me ‘Can I help you?’ – that was a good feeling.”

He listed Hutt St Centre as his mailing address and applied for a proof of age card – small steps that made a big difference for accessing further services. Mark began volunteering which gave him something to feel good about and a chance to make new friends. But, best of all, he says: “I got support to find a safe place of my own to live.”

Things are looking much brighter for Mark these days.  He has a stable income and regularly volunteers with Hutt St Centre’s GangGreens team to keep the local streets clean and tidy. He’s settled into his new place and even signed a long-term lease, giving him security for the first time in a long time.

It’s not easy to ask for help, but your support ensures Mark and others like him can find it here at Hutt St Centre. Thank you.
