Hutt St Centre

Finally, a life of comfort for Bob

As an older man in his 70s and struggling with mobility, Bob* should have had other people looking after him – not be living with chronic pain, cold, hungry, exhausted and sleeping rough.

But sadly, this was how Bob was living before he came to Hutt St Centre. We know this story will break your heart, then lift you up, knowing Bob is just one of the people you are helping every day.

It was a shock even for the team to see a man of Bob’s age in such ill-health, unable to care for himself, and sleeping rough in the parklands.

After a bad recovery from a hip replacement 30 years ago, Bob was only able to walk with crutches. Unable to bend or move his body with ease, Bob found it extremely difficult to even get down on the ground to sleep at night, let alone get up from it the next morning. He had to rely on the kindness of strangers passing by to get up from the ground each morning.

Fortunately, Bob found his way to Hutt St Centre, where he received the appropriate wellbeing services he desperately needed from people who cared – people just like you.

Case worker Beth* identified that Bob really needed to be living in an aged care facility, and began advocating for assessment by SA Health’s Geriatric Services Team. While waiting, Beth quickly got Bob into a rehabilitation hospital, so he would no longer have to sleep in the parklands.

Thanks to help from you and Beth, Bob now lives happily in an aged care facility receiving the high quality residential care he so desperately needed. He will not spend another cold night on the streets alone.

“It gives our whole team great joy when we see such a wonderful outcome offered to someone as desperately in need as Bob,” said Beth.

It’s thanks to the generosity of people like you that Bob is safe, cared for and has a comfortable bed of his own tonight. Thank you so much.

With you by our side, I look forward to working together to advocate with and empower people at risk of, or experiencing homelessness, to rebuild their lives on their pathway to a suitable home.

Your kind donation will make sure a person coming out of homelessness has the basic essentials to provide comfort, and turn a house into a home.
