Hutt St Centre

Catch-up with Coxy

The New Year is in full swing. In 2019 we will celebrate 65 years of serving the community through supporting people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage, with care and without judgement. It is a time to reflect on the many people who have come through our doors, facing hardship, requiring our support and recognising people’s incredible resilience and determination to rebuild their lives.

We never give up on people. Some people are here for the helping hand forward they need, and for some, the road to recovery is long, which is why we offer our patience and perseverance. The hard work, heartache and continued humility is worth it. People are worth it.

Although 65 years ‘young’, our staff and volunteers remain as committed and relentless as ever in continuing what the Daughters of Charity started and helping to end homelessness, one person at a time.

"Your generosity enables us to provide individual support. Each person we meet is treated with care and comfort. Thank you."

Our essential services will continue to be delivered from our historical and spiritual home in Hutt Street, a precinct and community we have been an integral part of since the 1950s. The Daughters of Charity’s St Louise House, as Hutt St Centre was originally known, officially opened on 7 March 1954.

We have listened to and engaged with local community members and stakeholders, and it is critical we continue our work in helping reduce homelessness in the city. To best serve the vulnerable group of people we exist to support, we will soon undertake improvements to our current facility. This long-overdue upgrade will enhance our service delivery and provide a more dignified experience for all.

Enhancements will include shower and toilet refurbishments, additional locker space to store personal belongings for rough sleepers, weather-proofing our back courtyard space to enable year-round use, refreshing our art room, and opening up our internal space to better facilitate our pathways to education, training and employment programs.

Your support through Walk a Mile in My Boots, and response to our appeals and other events make this possible.

I hope you enjoy reading some of the inspiring stories of hope, resilience, and determination we have to share, and once again thank you for supporting the most vulnerable in our community.

Warm regards,

Ian Cox, CEO
